subject. cafe identity, branding & environmental design
Mochi is a cafe and patisserie based in New York that is run by a Japanese patisserie. The term ‘mochi’ is a type of glutenous rice dessert from Japan, but also the name of the owner’s cat.
The cafe focuses on sweet treats such as cupcakes and mochi, Japanese coffee and bubble tea. The identity symbol focuses on a cat and a mochi illustration.
The theme of the cat with the dessert is used throughout the design story. Thematically, the design of the cafe gravitated towards a Japanese anime style mixed with pop art. Shades of pastel mixed with bright colours and sketchy lines was used to cultivate the look of the design. This style was chosen because it represents the youthful nature of the Japanese culture
